UTM parameters are tags appended to a URL that tell analytics platforms the source, medium, and campaign of a visit. There are five standard UTM parameters: utm_source (required — e.g. google, newsletter), utm_medium (required — e.g. cpc, email, social), utm_campaign (required — e.g. spring_sale), utm_term (optional — paid keyword), and utm_content (optional — for A/B ad variants). At minimum you need utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign for meaningful tracking in Google Analytics.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO or canonical URLs?

UTM parameters do not directly harm SEO, but they can cause duplicate content issues if Google indexes UTM-tagged URLs instead of the clean canonical URL. Best practice is to set a canonical tag on your pages pointing to the clean URL, and configure Google Analytics to strip UTM parameters before counting pageviews. You should also exclude UTM parameters in your robots.txt Disallow rules or via Google Search Console URL parameter settings if you see them appearing in your indexed pages.
